About Us
Selway River Adventures is a guide-owned and operated company built on decades of experience, a deep respect for wilderness, and a shared belief that access to the Selway River is a privilege. Our trips are led by seasoned river professionals who bring long careers in commercial rafting, wilderness travel, and river leadership across the West.
We approach the Selway not as a scripted adventure or high-volume operation, but as a continuation of a thoughtful, low-impact outfitting tradition. Every detail, from how we navigate whitewater to how we camp, cook, and move through the canyon, is shaped by stewardship, respect for the river, and attention to the people who travel it. Our company culture values humility, teamwork, and presence, ensuring each trip honors the wild character of the Selway while creating meaningful, well-cared-for experiences that endure long after the river miles are behind us.
Meet the Guides
Orea Roussis
Orea grew up in Connecticut—the Nutmeg State, far from any reputation for world-class whitewater. While in college, she discovered whitewater kayaking and quickly became devoted to the sport. In 1990, much to the dismay of her father, she began her career as a whitewater guide in the southeastern United States.
After graduating from college, Orea was offered a position as a safety kayaker on Chile’s BioBio River, where she had the rare opportunity to paddle the entire river before it was dammed. Recognizing that rowing would allow her to continue guiding multi-day rafting trips, she headed west for a river season, and was instantly hooked.
Over the past 35 years, Orea has guided on three continents, worked in 11 states, run more than 50 distinct river stretches, and led over 100 trips through the Grand Canyon. When she’s not on the river, she enjoys planning menus for river trips, reading, and making soap.
Andy Ambelang
Andy Ambelang is a Montana native, born in the Bitterroot Valley just over the Bitterroot Crest from the Selway River. He began his guiding career on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River and joined his first Selway River trip in 2009. Having spent his youth hiking and skiing near the Selway’s headwaters, Andy always knew the river was something special.
Today, he makes time to be on as many Selway trips as possible while continuing to guide in the Grand Canyon and on the Middle Fork of the Salmon. During the off-season, Andy can often be found skiing somewhere in Montana, helping friends with home or vehicle projects, or traveling the world in search of new paddling and skiing adventures.
Lloyd Lamb
Born and raised at the base of the Sawtooth Mountains in Stanley, Idaho, Lloyd Lamb grew up digging in the dirt and playing in the creek. In 1998, while home for a visit, he walked across the street to inquire about becoming a river guide. Hired on the spot, he began guiding day trips on the Salmon River.
Lloyd quickly discovered a love for introducing guests to the river and soon moved on to guiding multi-day trips on the Middle Fork of the Salmon. Over the following years, he rafted rivers across the United States, yet consistently found his way back home to Idaho.
Along the way, Lloyd discovered the Selway River and fell in love with its wild character and remoteness. Staying true to his childhood passions, when he’s not on the river he operates his own excavation company, proof that digging in the dirt and playing in the creek never gets old.
Anthony Burgstahler
Growing up near the South Fork of the American River in California, it was almost inevitable that whitewater would become a part of his life. His first river trips began as a pre-teen in the early 1980s, and by 1991 he had started guiding professionally. Since then, rivers have remained a constant, shaping both his career and his sense of place.
Over the years, he has run rivers throughout the western United States, as well as internationally in Nepal and Chile. His guiding experience extends beyond whitewater to include fly fishing, mountain biking, and hiking, reflecting a broad and adaptable skill set rooted in outdoor leadership.
When he’s not on the river, he works as a versatile handyperson for multiple property management companies. In his free time, he enjoys long walks with his dogs, spending time with his daughter, and whenever the opportunity arises, traveling light to explore new places, often with nothing more than a small carry-on and a sense of adventure.
Abby McCartney
Abby is a six-year river guide coming back for her second season on the Selway! She grew up in northeast Ohio and attended college in Salt Lake City, where she fell in love with the rivers and wild spaces of the western US. In the winter, Abby spends her time in South America, where she works on the Futaleufu River in Chile. In her free time, Abby travels, kayaks, and, when she can, spends time with chickens!
Fun fact: Abby has never ridden a jet ski, and it is one of her heart’s truest desires. Additionally, she hopes to go to Antarctica before she turns 30 because it is the last continent that she has yet to visit!
When all is said and done, Abby’s favorite place to be is on the shore of a river with good people, and she can’t wait to spend time with you on the beautiful Selway!
Derick Pritchett
Derick is a multi-talented individual, often found with either a raft pump or the Riptide Brewery pump in his hand. He began guiding in 2009 on the mighty Pigeon River out of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Eager to move beyond his Southeast roots and explore more of the world, Derick eventually headed west.
Since then, he has guided on the Colorado, Middle Fork and Main Salmon, Snake, and Selway Rivers, as well as in Alaska. His passion for guiding runs so deep that he works year-round, spending winters in Chile guiding and brewing beer on the Futaleufú, and heading to Nepal each fall to guide there. When he’s not on the river, Derick loves to fish, drink great beer, and chase grand adventures.
Doug Proctor
Doug grew up outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. He spent many years canoeing with his family and Boy Scouts on class I rivers in southern Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. In 1966, he ran his first 2-week canoe trip at 12 years old in Kentucky. In 1977, Doug started guiding whitewater rafting trips commercially on the New and Gauley rivers and spent 35 years as an outfitter in West Virginia. His love of rivers carried him to the Grand Canyon, Alaska, Chile, Costa Rica, Idaho, and many more rivers in the East and West.
He now lives in Stanley, Idaho, with his wife Cathy and dogs Lucy and Nellie. Guiding river trips for the last 50 years and sharing that experience with his many guests and friends has been Doug’s greatest passion in life.
Our History
Our roots on the Selway run especially deep. The outfitting permit we operate under dates back to 1971, when the Masoner family became one of the first permitted outfitters on the river. For over 47 years, the company was guided first by Elwood Masoner and later by his son Kenny, earning a reputation for excellence, humility, and deep respect for the Selway.
In 2018, four longtime river professionals came together on a Selway trip guided by Kenny. That journey reaffirmed not only the power of the river, but the importance of how it is guided. When the opportunity arose to carry the operation forward, it came with a clear responsibility: to continue offering Selway trips with the same care, integrity, and respect that defined the operation for generations.
We are honored to carry that legacy forward.
