Adventurous.
Thoughtful. Immersive.

5-6 Day Format

Our trips cover roughly 47 river miles, beginning at the Paradise Guard Station boat launch and ending at Race Creek just above Selway Falls.

Each journey is designed to balance steady river travel, whitewater excitement, and true immersion in wilderness. The 5-day trips tend to be more focused on the river miles and whitewater flow, while the 6-day trips often include additional time for exploration, fishing, or spending a second night at scenic camps.

Because water levels and current flow rates vary from year to year, the rhythm and feel of each trip can change—higher water early in the season typically means quicker, more powerful rapids, while later-season flows often allow for longer fishing windows and slightly gentler float sections.

Whitewater Difficulty

The Selway’s technical whitewater can challenge even seasoned rafters. Along its 47-mile journey from the put-in at Paradise Guard Station to the take-out at Race Creek above Selway Falls, the river features 38 named rapids, many rated Class IV+, including Goat Creek, Double Drop, Ladle, and Wolf Creek. The river drops an average of 28 feet per mile, increasing to over 50 feet per mile below Moose Creek, creating sustained, exhilarating whitewater.

Due to its short runnable season, challenging conditions, and limited access, the Selway remains one of the most exclusive river trips in the country. Selway River Adventures offers only five to six trips per year, ensuring an intimate, low-impact experience that honors the wild nature of the river. These multi-day journeys combine thrilling whitewater, pristine wilderness camps, and deep immersion in one of the last truly wild river corridors in the Lower 48, an unforgettable adventure for river enthusiasts seeking something truly rare.

What Makes This Trip Rare

A Selway River trip is rare for several reasons:

  • Permit Limits: Only one commercial group of no more than 16 people is allowed to launch each day under U.S. Forest Service regulation, meaning most travelers will see no other river parties across multiple days.

  • Short Runable Season: The Selway’s snowmelt-driven flows create a brief window for rafting each year, often only a few weeks long.

  • Remote Wilderness: Floating through the Selway–Bitterroot Wilderness, one of the largest roadless areas in the Lower 48, visitors encounter a landscape largely unchanged by time, with minimal evidence of modern human presence.

  • Integrated Experience: You won’t just raft! You’ll camp riverside, explore tributaries, hike scenic ridges, fish for native trout, and absorb the rhythms of a truly remote mountain river. This isn’t just a rafting trip, it’s a full-bodied wilderness river journey.

Who This Trip Is For

The Selway is ideally suited for experienced, adventurous river travelers, but also for the intrepid adventurer! This trip is best for people with:

  • Previous multi-day rafting or paddling experience

  • Comfort with Class IV whitewater in unpredictable flows

  • A love for solitude, camping, and wilderness

  • A desire to explore landscapes deeper and quieter than typical commercial rivers

While previous rafting experience or strong technical skill isn’t required of every participant, a willingness to engage actively with the river and camp life is essential. This is a trip designed for those who want more than sightseeing, those who want to be in the wilderness.
