Selway River Trip FAQs

Do I need to sign a waiver before rafting?

Yes. All guests are required to complete a liability waiver and trip registration form before departure. These forms are part of the booking process and are required to hold your reservation. The liability waiver acknowledges the inherent risks of wilderness river travel and helps ensure everyone understands the nature of the experience.

How do I know this trip is for me?

A Selway River trip is ideal for adventurous, flexible travelers who are comfortable in a remote wilderness setting. You should enjoy being outdoors, be reasonably active, and be willing to adapt to changing conditions. While the trip is a rewarding experience, it can be physically and mentally demanding at times. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to talk through expectations and help you decide if this trip is a good fit.

How much of a gratuity for guides is customary?

Guide gratuities are always appreciated and typically range from 10–15% of the trip cost, depending on your experience. Tips are discretionary and may be given in cash, Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, personal check, or other payment method at the end of the trip.

What if the weather is bad or the river is high?

Weather and river conditions are part of any wilderness river trip. Trips run rain or shine, and conditions may include sun, wind, rain, cold mornings, or hot afternoons. High water can increase the excitement and challenge of the rapids, while lower water can mean more technical boating. Our guides continuously assess conditions and adjust plans to prioritize safety.

Do I need rafting experience before joining a trip?

No prior rafting experience is required. However, guests should be confident swimmers, comfortable in moving water, and able to follow guide instructions. A detailed safety and river orientation is provided at the start of the trip. We also encourage you to read through our trip's Essential Eligibility Requirements here.

What is the age limit?

Due to the remote location, physical demands, and whitewater difficulty, Selway River trips are generally best suited for adults and older teens. Minimum age requirements may vary by trip and river conditions. Please contact us to discuss age guidelines for your specific trip.

Where do we meet for the trip and how do I get there?

Trips typically begin with a pre-trip meeting in Hamilton, Montana, the evening before launch. From there, to the put-in at Paradise Guard Station. Detailed meeting locations, directions, and timing will be provided before your trip.

Do the rafts flip?

While rare, raft flips are possible in whitewater, especially on a technical river like the Selway. Our guides are experienced, highly trained, and safety systems are in place. Guests should be prepared for the possibility of a swim and able to actively participate in their own rescue.

Can people reach me during my river trip?

No. Once on the river, there is no cell service. This is part of the Selway’s magic; a true unplugged wilderness experience. Guides carry emergency communication devices for safety purposes only.

What if there’s an emergency?

Guides are trained in wilderness first aid, swiftwater rescue, and emergency response. Emergency communication devices are carried on all trips. While help may be hours away due to the remote setting, our guides are experienced in managing medical and evacuation situations.

Should I bring a camera?

Yes, but it should be waterproof or well-protected. Action cameras and waterproof point-and-shoots work best. Phones are discouraged on the river unless fully waterproof. Cameras are always brought at your own risk.

How can I bathe or wash my hair?

To protect the river’s water quality, bathing is required away from the river and above the high-water line. Buckets of water or solar showers can be filled and used for bathing with biodegradable soap. River trips are more about embracing simplicity than daily showers.

What about bathrooms?

Portable toilets are provided and set up in camp. Privacy systems are used, and guides will explain procedures during your orientation. Everything is managed with dignity, cleanliness, and Leave No Trace ethics.

Any tips for feminine hygiene on a river trip?

Bring more supplies than you think you’ll need and store them in waterproof bags. Menstrual cups are a popular option for river trips, but use whatever system you’re most comfortable with. Guides are experienced and discreet; don’t hesitate to ask questions.

What is the camping gear like?

SRA provides high-quality tents, sleeping bags, pads, group kitchen gear, and dining setups. Camps are thoughtfully chosen and set up for comfort within a wilderness setting. You are welcome to bring your own sleeping bag, pad, and tent, but please let us know when you make your reservation so that we can plan accordingly.

Do I need rain gear?

Yes. Even in summer, rain and cool weather are possible. A waterproof rain jacket and pants are essential and can also serve as wind protection on cooler days.

Are there a lot of bugs?

Bugs vary depending on water levels, time of year, and weather. Early-season trips may have more mosquitoes or no-see-ums, while later trips generally have fewer. Bring insect repellent and lightweight long sleeves if you’re sensitive.

Can I request a certain guide?

You’re welcome to make a request, and we’ll do our best to accommodate it. However, guide assignments depend on logistics, availability, and safety needs, so specific requests cannot be guaranteed.
